Last one from this log folks - we may not see this variety again as it's nearly impossible to find rough. Some collectors call this peanut wood, but the peanut shaped inclusions in this fossil specimen actually come from shipworm tunnels! This one is cut from the center of a small partial log we obtained a few years ago. We don't see much of this material anymore and this nice specimen represents a great chance for a unique and storied specimen at an every day collector... price! This is a slab of highly polished petrified conifer that comes from Queensland, Australia. It's a long way to go for petrified wood, but the slice you see here contains several square inches of extremely detailed and finely preserved wavy wood grain that shows exactly why it's shipped so far! But as nice as the wood itself is, the real treasure is in those oval shapes you see scattered throughout the specimen. Those are actually the mineralized trails of ship worms that ate through this wood while it was submerged under water before it was petrified! Ship worms are a mollusk that chews through wood and leaves it riddled with long tunnels. It's a truly fantastic and colorful fossil treasure from "down under" that will please even the most discriminating collector! This material is comparable in wood grain detail (under magnification) and gem quality to the Roger Mountain specimens we dig here in Oregon. The Aussie wood is characterized by browns and creams that are unmatched in character and visual appeal by anything we have here in the states. Like the Roger Mountain pieces, I rarely see complete rounds, but when a naturally weathered chunk of this wood is cut to reveal the wavy wood grain, you've really got a fossil treasure worth showing off. If you haven't purchased petrified wood from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary before, you're missing out on one of eBay's best sources for high quality lapidary specimens. I have built an extensive shop and outfitted it with custom built equipment that I've been fiddling with for years to master the fine art of coaching a mirror finish from every stone I sell. I know you can't tell from a photo or from the descriptions I write, but I really do put a lot of effort into making sure the finish on our stones is the best you'll find anywhere, and judging by the comments in our feedback file I think it's safe to say we've succeeded! If you've got a minute, you can take a quick tour by clicking here. Thanks for checking us out and good luck in adding this beautiful petrified wood slab to your own collection! This is a large sized slab. It measures about 6 7/8" x 3 1/8" across the polished face. It's cut about 0.34" thick. Weight is 0.52 lbs. A nice, unique naturally wonderful stone collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary.
