The image pictures John L. in full figure striking a classic pugilist stance during his reign as World Champion (although at that time there were no formal boxing titles in existence) - likely taken around the time of his classic fight with Jake Kilrain - the last bare-knuckled Heavyweight Championship fight. The Cabinet Card carries the mark of a New York photographer however the photographer’s name is worn and unreadable.
John Lawrence Sullivan, often called the "Boston Strong Boy", was an extraordinarily popular figure in the late nineteenth century, and a genuine boxing immortal. He was the link between bare knuckles and glove fighting, and the first great American sports idol. In an age when professional bare-knuckled bouts often dragged on for 50-plus rounds, few John L Sullivan fights lasted more than a couple. From 1877 to the turn of the century, Sullivan literally knocked out hundreds of capable men and was the undisputed Champion of the World. He was a broad-chested bull - powerful and quick, destroying opponents with either hand, and taking punishment like no other. Many experts still consider him the best heavyweight ever. The photograph offered here pictures Sullivan at the height of his popularity if not the height of his prowess - still, it would take a very brave man to enter the ring against this heavily muscled pugilist.
This rare and original 19th century Cabinet Card Photograph is in good to very good condition but displays nicely as matted and framed. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality however the Image itself and the card mount have damage at the edge. The Photo has a tear at the upper right hand corner and loss at the top of the left hand edge. The mount has a chip at the upper right hand corner, rounding to the other corners and other light edge wear. Please see the scans below for a good representation of the content and condition of this rare John L. Sullivan Cabinet Card Photo.
