1783 PAY ORDER ISSUED TO COLONEL JOHN DURKEE OF THE 20TH CONTINENTAL REGIMENT WHO TOOK OVER GENERAL BENEDICT ARNOLD’S COMMAND
Colonel John Durkee took over General Benedict Arnold’s command of the 20th Continental Regiment in August 1776, a unit of the Connecticut Line within the Continental Army. The regiment was posted in New Jersey during the early stages of the New York and New Jersey campaign. It later retreated with George Washington’s army in late 1776 and then participated in the Battle of Trenton. Some of its men chose to overstay their enlistment and also saw action in the Battles of the Assunpink Creek and Princeton in early 1777. Due to Durkee’s exceptional leadership, the regiment was referred to as Durkee’s Regiment.
