Greetings! You are purchasing a challenge coin 1950 1952 17th Infantry Regiment Korea. It features a buffalo as well with the date 1812. The 1812 date is symbolic of the original 17th Infantry Regiment formed on 11 January 1812 but was consolidated with four other regiments into the Third Infantry Regiment after suffering staggering losses in the war of 1812 at the Battle Of The River Raisin aka The River Raisin Massacre .
The buffalo nickname was on th...e suggestion of Colonel William W. "Buffalo Bill" Quinn. These were tokens or challenge coins that the men from the 17th infantry regiment had. There are a few examples with different end dates. This is an extremely rare one with the date 1952 which is when the Korean War aka Korean "conflict" or "police action" (1950 - 1953 with a cease fire that has been in effect ever since) was still hot and heavy. Almost all others I have seen have later years on them which makes this an early example. It measures 13/16" in diameter and the hole in it is original to the item. I guarantee my description so buy with confidence. Insured shipping will be $6.00.
