This is a fabulous antique steelyard type postal balance for weighing up to 16 ounces. The sliding counterweight slips into notches in the beam which are marked with the weight categories in use from 1840 to 1865, with the addional 1/4 ounce mark for letters to France - each position carried a different cost of postage. It is a delightfully elegant design and is a handsome display item, with a lovely wooden base measuring 6.5 x 3.5 inches. It stands at a height of about 6.75 inch...es overall, the letter pan measures 2.75 x 2.25 inches and the beam is 6.5 inches long. It is in lovely condition with light signs of use/age.
