Original Description:
Exceptionally Rare and original, 1860's Signed and Inscribed CDV Photograph of a Union Civil War Mississippi Marine Brigade Cavalry Officer. Offered here is a bust portrait of Lieutenent Deloss E. Wilson - Commanding Officer of Cavalry Company D, Mississippi Marine Brigade. This period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/2” by 4” including its original, square corner, blue rule border, Photographer’s Card Mount.
This is a vignette, bust portrait o...f Lieut. Wilson wearing a frock coat with shoulder bars that identify him as a 1st Lieutenant. The Image itself is signed and inscribed "Yours Truly / Lt. D E Wilson". The back of the mount carries the mark of the photographer - “Washington Gallery” of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
This original CDV Photograph came to us from the legendary Brown Water Navy Collection of Richard B. Cohen.
From Lancaster, Wisconsin, Delos E. Wilson enlisted as a 1st Sergeant of Co. F. of the 10th Wisconsin Infantry on 9/12/61. Sergeant Wilson witnessed the heavy fighting at Perryville and Stones' River before transferring to the ad-hoc Mississippi Marine Brigade on 1/20/63 where he was subsequently commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company D., Mississippi Marine Brigade on 2/9/63. Interestingly, another vignette of Delos Wilson is found in a composite photograph of "M.M.B. Lieutenants" (Group 5. No. 6) published in "History of the Ram Fleet" authored by the Society of Survivors, 1907. Here, Wilson is listed as a lieutenant in the company sized cavalry detachment (Co. D) of the M.M.B.
The cavalry detachment was consolidated with 1st Regt. Mississippi Marine Brigade in August 1864 and the various companies were mustered out beginning in January 1865 as supernumerary. Several Midwestern states supplied men to the innovative amphibous Mississippi Marine Brigade, first commanded by Charles Ellet, Jr. (1810-1862) and later his brother Alfred W. Ellet (1820-1895). Appointed Colonel of Engineers by Secretary of War Edward Stanton, the former civil engineer Charles Ellet, Jr. oversaw the construction of the United States Ram Fleet in Cincinnati and commanded the fledgling force of converted river steamers against a Rebel flotilla at the Battle of Memphis, where he was mortally wounded. Alfred W. Ellet (formerly Lieutenant Colonel, 59th Illinois) assumed command of the Ram Fleet in June 1862. He was promoted to Brigadier General in November 1862 after proposing a mixed force of infantry, cavalry, and artillery that never exceeded 850 men to act as "marines" aboard the roving Mississippi Ram Fleet. Ellet led the MMB during the Vicksburg Campaign in a series of smaller combined operations that generally reflected well upon the nascent command, despite complications of leadership. In the face of ongoing administrative problems and internal complaints, the Secretary of War ultimately ordered the MMB disbanded in August 1864. At this point a number of long serving officers were summarily relieved or discharged angering General Ellet, while the enlisted "marines" were removed from their vessels and assigned to shore duty in Vicksburg. While the details of Lieutenant Wilson's service as a Mississippi Marine are shrouded in history, the signed carte is a legitimately rare example from an equally obscure and perhaps maligned Civil War unit.
This rare and original, albumen CDV Photograph is in excellent condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Photo and the mount are generally clean and crisp although there is a small, light stain at the lower right hand corner of the Image and some light edge wear to the mount.
A very rare and very attractive, 1860's Signed and Inscribed CDV Photograph of Civil War Mississippi Marine Brigade Lieutenant Deloss E. Wilson and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
