This document, early Revolutionary War dated, July 3rd, 1775....where Captain Jonathan Fitch, Commissary, has been paid for troop provisions, possibly for the Battle of Bunker Hill, which took place just a two weeks before....signed on front by William Pitkin  and Oliver Ellsworth,   on back by Jonathan Fitch. Document is 8x9, damp stained, folds, else in overall good condition.Oliver Ellsworth (April 29, 1745 – November 26, 1807) was an American lawyer, judge, po...litician, and diplomat. He was a framer of the United States Constitution, a United States Senator from Connecticut, and the third Chief Justice of the United States. Additionally, Ellsworth received 11 electoral votes in the 1796 presidential election.COLONEL JONATHAN FITCH 1727-1793..... Born in Norwalk Connecticut. Colonel Fitch graduated from Yale in 1748. He then became the Steward of Yale. Before the Revolution, Colonel Fitch was the High Sheriff and Naval Officer of New Haven. Jonathan Fitch Commanded the second regiment of militia in 1775 with the rank of Colonel. The duties of this office engaged his attention for the rest of the war. In 1776 he was appointed State Commissary by the Connecticut General Assembly. He was the purchaser of arms, (guns, bayonets etc..), goods, and stores for both the State and the Continental troops. Keeping a large army supplied was a monumental task. Colonel Fitch was a very important character in the war for independence.William Pitkin (1725-1789) was the son of Governor William Pitkin and served as an officer during the French & Indian War and as a member of the Council of Safety during the American Revolution. He owned one of the first powder mills in colonial America, from which he supplied gunpowder to the Continental Army.
