Antique 19th Century Hand Forged Hawsing Iron. This tool was used in Ship Building to apply caulk between the seams of wood, (mostly on deck seams). A two-man operation, one man would hold the iron while another used a mallet to drive the caulk deep into the seams. It has a rotating head to facilitate use. From what I understand there would be 3 blade thicknesses used (a wide, medium, and thin head). The 3 tools would be used, in order, to drive the caulk deeper and deeper into the seam...s. This iron has the thin blade, as you can see in the picture. The iron has a 22 3/4" handle. The head is 7" long and 4" wide at the end.Antique Primitive Condition. One chip-off of the blade at one end. Other than that, no other damage to metal. Solid and sturdy with age discoloration as shown in pics.If you have any questions or if you are making an offer (where applicable) please allow time for a response, since I am not online 24/7.I will ship FedEx Ground or USPS Ground to US addresses. In order to save on shipping charges and be environmentally friendly, I try to use recycled shipping supplies whenever possible. Thanks for looking!
