Newlyn School Arts And Crafts Copper Tray / Calling Card Tray / Display Piece
Item History & Price
Good and early Newlyn School tray / plaque /display piece.Solid repousse'd copper featuring a fishing boat with sail and 2 fisherman in the boat.Unmarked, but this is an early piece of work as Newlyn did not mark their work until they became more commercial and started selling through Liberty and at Arts and Crafts exhibitions. The first known Newlyn catalogue was produced in 1908 and makes no mention of stamping so it could be assumed stamping was not introduced until around or ...just after that date. Ref Newlyn Copper Daryl Bennett page109The subject matter is quite naive but the repousse work is good and it has a definite look of Obed Nicholls in the wave pattern. The tray has a rolled edge, photo 4. This is a Newlyn feature. The reverse of the tray is dark patinated copper. There is no damage to the metal ware.Measures 9 and half inches length x 7 inches wide
