These earrings are about as big the average ear size. And they couldn't be more golden than 24-karat coating, which was probably King Midas's favorite karat! Topping it all off, they are also embedded with glitzy Swarovski rhinestones. All packaged up in a modernist — these days, some say brutalist — aesthetics that is just so "in" these days.<...br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; box-sizing: border-box;">
By Woloch Paris, a venerable jewelry house in France owned by the husband-and-wife team of Joseph and Rose Woloch; it was in business from the 1930s through the 2000s and produced pieces for Coco Chanel in the 1980s. Woloch pieces are scarce in the U.S., this pair comes from the estate of a lady who worked for Neiman Marcus for 30 years.
From the few pieces we've seen online, and those featured in author Ginger Moro's authoritative book, "European Designer Jewelry", the Woloch company created pieces that reflected prevailing fashion trends. Thus, their pieces from the 1940s were Art Deco-inspired; from the 1950s; elaborately-beaded styled; and the 1960s-1970s, Byzantine and exotic.
These earrings mirrored the over-the-top exuberance of the 1980s. They are big and brash, with bold minimalist lines, rich gold color and huge size. The company's most collectible pieces — such as our earrings — are from these era, showcasing a unique hammered, hand-hewn, and organic look. Though oversize, these jewelry pieces, like our earrings, are surprisingly lightweight — the Woloch company excelled in casting them out of resin meticulously applied with 24-karat goldleaf, and inset with glittery rhinestones.
Bigger pieces in the same style as these earrings — like a necklace or bracelet — fetch prices from $500 and up. A necklace in the same style, with the Woloch's emblematic motif named for the owner, the rose, retail for $700 and up.
Our earrings are large convex ovals, measuring 2 1/4" tall and 1 1/2" wide, with deep ridges running vertically. (I took a picture of the earrings with a quarter, just so you can see how BIG these are!). The grooves are hand-set with glittery rhinestones, which accentuate the rich golden hue. Organically, they look like seed pods; in the South, they are reminiscent of pecan nuts, though their ridges are deeper than the real thing.
The backs are just plain shiny gold, with clip backs that are similar to those used by other French fashion houses like Chanel. Marked Woloch and Paris within an oval cartouche at the base of the earrings.
In excellent condition, with little visible wear. These earrings are more golden in person than our pictures can capture, and they are well preserved. With all glittery and original rhinestones. Can't get any better than these.
