Jerald Sherman has been acclaimed as one of the three most outstanding sand painters. Born in 1957 of a Navajo father and Hopi mother, Jerald expresses the traditions of this dual cultural heritage in his work. He was taught the sand painting art at the age of 13 by Harry Yabeney, a Navajo medicine man. From Harry, he learned the traditional Sun and Eagle sand painting, and he continues to do this design with his own special variations. Originally from the Sheep Springs area of the Navajo reservation Jerald went to school in Aztec, New Mexico. Except for one art class, taken in high school, he has had no formal art training. He is accomplished not only in sand art but also in acrylics and oils. Regardless of the media, in which he is working, the result is contemporary style which is uniquely his own. Recognition for his work has come through numerous top awards he has received at judged exhibitions such as the New Mexico State Fair, the Gallup Ceremonial, Santa Fe's Indian Market, and numerous other art shows. It has appreciated in value significantly over the years since each piece is a one of a kind creation. His ideas come from dreams and experiences and each is signed in sand on the front with Jerald's distinctive hallmark.
