Item History & Price
This doll was most likely an early work of Chevak Alaska native Inuit artist Rosalie Paniyak. What is unusual about this doll is it is 15 inches tall, not 11 inches like most of her works. The last picture shows some of her dolls for height reference. This doll is in original condition with no damage and is self standing. She is made from sealskin and other naturalistic materials and is wearing a gut parka.
Rosalie Paniyak was born on March 25, 1934 and passed away on Saturd...ay, December 15, 2007. She was a resident of Chevak, Alaska and is one among several Chevak dollmakers whose work contributed to the development of a distinctive regional style over the past decades. She called her dolls "the uglies" and has been featured in several books about Alaskan doll making artists. Her dolls are known for their witty, whimsical, and sometimes macabre faces which typically have long pointed noses and chins, with beads for teeth and eyes.
