Very rare and original, 1889 Large Size Horse Racing subject American Tobacco Card Premium from the N239 Series titled “Racehorses”. This exceptionally rare and highly sought after, Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company “High Class Cigarettes” Premium Tobacco Card measures approx. 12" by 10" and is titled "George M. Patchen".
The N239 Tobacco Cards are a series of Premiums that were obtained by redeeming coupons that were inserted into packages of Kinney B...ros.’s High Class Cigarettes. There were 100 Oversize Cards in the Set and the images on the Cards were identical to those that appeared on the small size N229, N230 and N231 series insert Tobacco Cards. Each Card featured a portrait of a famous British or American Champion Race Horse or Trotter.
The Image on this beautiful Tobacco Card is fully titled “George M. Patchen / Trotting Stallion Record 2.23 ½. Driven by D. Tallman”. It is Copyright 1889 by Kinney Bros. Depicted is a massive and beautiful Trotter in harness at a full trot with D. Tallman in the gig.
All examples of N239 Tobacco Cards are exceptionally rare because of the fact that they were only obtained by redeeming coupons found in the cigarette packs rather than the usual insert cards. Apparently, example of the 25 “Trotters” in the are especially difficult to come by and examples that remain in the outstanding condition seen here rarely come to market.
This very rare and wonderful, 1889 N239 Premium Tobacco card is in very good condition. The Tobacco Card is very attractive. The colors are bright and vibrant – rich and warm. The Card is generally clean with some light soiling to the borders, two ting spots in the image area and a few very light, small spots of water staining. There is a crease in the margin at the lower right hand corner. Unfortunately it is slightly trimmed along the bottom edge. The Card came to us matted and framed as as displayed presented in outstanding condition. It is still tipped to the old framer’s back board with 2 pieces of framer’s tape at the top edge.
