Here we have a clean RARE, Antique SPIERS AYR, Scottish Dovetailed Steel & Rosewood Infill Miter Mitre Smooth Plane, 10.5" L. StewartSpiers was a small but innovative firm of plane-makers in Scotland, founded inAyr in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1840 and operating until approx. the mid 1930’s. I believe that this example is the "Mitre Plane with Gunmetal Lever Cap" offered in the late 1800's. Nigel Lampert's book indicates that in the late 1850's and 1860's these ...planes used a 'combination construction' of screws through the sides into the infill and dovetailing in the toe section. I believe that is what we have here. A RARE plane indeed !! The steel body is made using this construction technique and is filled / stuffed with beautiful Rosewood (no cracks in the wood). The body, sole and mouth are in very good condition with the typical minor nicks and dings from well over 140 years of use !! The sole has nice extensions at the toe and heel. The gunmetal / brass lever cap is stamped 'SPIERS AYR" and has a tightening knob with a knurled edge. The plane is fitted with a 'snecked', nice thick cutting iron made by AMES HOWART, SHEFFIELD and is 2-1/4" wide. This iron is original to the plane with both the Rosewood bed and the iron being stamped '6'. The fit is very good and makes for a 'tight mouth' at the opening. Nice heavy plane weighing approx. 5 lb. 5 oz. ! There is an owners mark on the top of front section of Rosewood, and partial owners marks on the extended toe plate and the lever cap . No cracks, breaks or repairs in this plane. Please review all pictures since they ARE part of the item description ! **Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
