MID 19TH CENTURY HOUSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY JANE DAVIES AGED 16 - September 1867

Mid 19th century sampler by Jane Davies aged 16 - 1867. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central bird flanked by a bird with its wings outstretched, a heart and floral motif. There is a heart and diamond above the central bird with flowers and trees on either side, whilst beneath is a floral motif with a dog, tree and flower basket to its left and right. The middle... section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit tree with a heart, bird and tulip to its left and right followed by a flower basket which has a heart and diamond on either side of its topmost bloom. Jane's details and the date of September 1 '67 are contained within a plaque beneath the fruit tree with a rose and floral motif on each side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a charming house with ivy growing up the right side wall and a garden to the side with two trees and a red gate. There is a floral motif on each side of the house and garden with two hearts above the left side motif and a flower and heart above that on the right. There is a flower basket over the roof of the house with a fruit basket to its left and two floral motifs and a fruit basket to its right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border.The gauze has overall brown discolouration consistent with its age, and the colours of the wool are good with some shades not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. There is also the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how rich the colours were when Jane first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and fraying around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 22" x 26 1/2"
