This is an heirloom within my wife's family, whose mother recently passed. See the insurance appraisal from 1953. There was a 1.6 ct. diamond in the ring in 1953. It was taken out for my mother-in-law to make a wedding ring.
Now, in the appraisal it only says "white gold top mounting" because of course gold was worth very little back then, in fact about $34.84 per ounce. At the ...current weight of 10.2 grams (with diamond out), in 1953 it would have been worth about $6.66, assuming it is 14K gold.
I am just saying perhaps a more definitive appraisal describing the gold content was unimportant, and the ring itself is not marked. With the gold value at $6.66, that would make the 1.6ct diamond worth $773.34 in 1953.
We just had the diamond appraised at $11, 000, so someone thought this ring was quite valuable! Anyway, I am just saying the ring is not marked, yet I assume it is 14k gold. If you'd like to buy it, but the precise gold content is of paramount importance to you, you can return it at my expense within 14 days of purchase.
The 1953 appraisal is not included with the purchase, because it includes personal information. I sized the ring at size 11, and that should be pretty close. I see that the ring was resized at some point.
Good Luck Bidding, and thanks for reading this far! :)
