Just when you think you know what to expect from a petrified log you cut something like this! This is a very unusual petrified wood slab that comes from one of my favorite petrified wood deposits. I'm not entirely certain how to interpret what I'm seeing here, but I can confirm that the wood grain is from a conifer similar to modern juniper. This short petrified log had a fairly typical, uniform, oval shape that gave no clues to the wild wood grain... hidden inside. The interior appears to be a very chaotic collection of swirls, rings and eyes that suggest either the craziest whorl I've ever seen or perhaps the beginnings of a stump. Besides being fascinating, it's also quite attractive. This fossil log is preserved in coffee and cream colors that show the wood grain in nice detail. It's highly agatized and took a nice polish. It's definitely one of the most unusual pieces I've seen come from the McDermitt deposit in a few years. This fascinating and easy to display sized slab is a fabulous example of a well preserved conifer species in gem grade agate with rich, natural wood tone coloring! A wonderful specimen that we've polished into a world class collectible to introduce you to one of Oregon's premier petrified forests! This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a desolate sagebrush desert that spans over 100 square miles on the Oregon/Nevada border. It's a slice from a well preserved juniper tree that is actually somewhat of a puzzle under a loup. At first glance (under 10x magnification) the wood appears to be juniper with sharp rings and equally sharp rays. It's preserved with absolutely gorgeous gem quality agate in warm, natural wood tones forever capturing this ancient fossil. The exterior is still ash white - colored by the ancient volcanic blast that buried this prehistoric forest. The inside, however, is a richly colored array of gem quality agate that preserved the wood grain beautifully in every detail! The cell structure from the growth rings in this attractive fossil specimen are amazingly well preserved, especially in the lighter colored regions. It would really be an excellent specimen for the petrified wood identification buff. This excellent round comes from one of Oregon's premier petrified wood deposits known to collectors the world over. If you don't have a specimen from this area, this would be a dandy to get you acquainted!! It's cut from the center of a nicely shaped log that allows you to see the rays and other cell features very easily with a 10x loup (the rings are visible to the naked eye). This specimen has been carefully polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. It's another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! This complete round measures about 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" and is cut about 0.40" thick. Weight is 0.78 lbs.
