1905 Victor D Fancy Case Phonograph W/Original Victor 22 " Victor Spear Tip Horn
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:44038303 | Brand: Victor |
Here's a gorgeous 1905 Victor D disc phonograph. Introduced in 1903, the D was Victor's flagship phonograph. It was the biggest, best machine they made, and the most expensive. Equipped with a 12" turntable and a triple spring motor, it was housed in an ornate oak cabinet reminiscent of the Victor MS but considerably larger.
Condition of this D is superb. The turntable felt has been replaced, but the phonograph is otherwise original throughout, including the cabinet finish, which has been hand-waxed, rubbed out, and then buffed to a satin sheen. Same for the original 22" diameter Victor Spear Tip horn, whose original "Nipper" decal is almost perfect.
Back-bracket enamel is original and glossy, and the decorations on the back-bracket are original and still prominent. Small hardware is clean, and all of it is original.
All of the nickel-plating is original, and all of the nickel-plated parts are clean.
The horn collar is original and its nickel-plated exterior is blind-stamped with patent information. The horn elbow is original, with no cracks, no rust, nor any other damage.
The 3-spring brass motor has plenty of torque and is able to play multiple sides with just a single winding. The machine is in good working order, with a great sounding Victor Exhibition reproducer.
I'll include with the phonograph an early, acoustically recorded 78RPM record, and if you get tired of listening to it, there are plenty of other titles available on ebay and elsewhere. Hundreds of early them show up on ebay on a weekly basis, and they typically sell just a few dollars each.
I'm one of ebay's best known, most highly regarded sellers of collector quality phonographs. I've been selling and shipping them for more than 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you'll receive a phonograph that arrives safely because it's been carefully packed (by me, not by some well-intentioned but nonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store who wouldn't know a phonograph from a farm tool), and you'll receive a phonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up and operating instructions, so you won't be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your "bargain" arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you'll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.
When you've finished checking out my ebay listings this week, take a look at my TechnoGallerie website, where you can buy hard-to-find antique phonographs, antique radios, antique cameras and other gadgets you're not likely to see anywhere else. Just type TechnoGallerie in the address line of your web browser and hit the enter key. TechnoGallerie has a newsletter, too, and if you take a second to sign up for it, you'll receive an email update whenever I list something new on the site -- typically once a week.
Due to the size of the horn, the phonograph can be shipped only to addresses in the United States. Auction participants with no prior feedback history should also contact me before placing a bid. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
