Here's the latest intriguing petrified wood display piece from the rockshop! We don't see much of this material anymore so when we find a specimen with such beautiful rings and rays with that classic Swartz Canyon color, we can't help but polish it to reveal it for the true fossil gem that it is! Swartz oak is one of the most collectable petrified wood specimens around and a piece is a must in any fossil wood collection. There is an interesting intrusion into this piece tha...t appears to be a root growing in what must have been a downed log (there are actually smaller roots to the right of the main intrusion). This beautiful and unusual specimen is prepared properly to show off all of the beauty and intricate fossil structure whether viewed with the naked eye or under magnification. Our polish is not only beautiful, it's so flawless you can see every detail that this fossil treasure has to show! This is a choice slab of classic oak with very bold medullary rays piercing every growth ring!This slab came from a large amorphous shaped chunk of very colorful petrified wood from Swartz Canyon in Central Oregon. I cut this slab from a piece of this rare material we recently obtained in an estate auction. The wood was pretty enough and unique enough I was certain a petrified wood collector would love to have it in their collection so I finished this piece as well.Swartz Canyon is famous here in Oregon because it produced some of the finest petrified oak trees found anywhere in the world. The dark coffee and roasted chestnut (approaching rhubarb) colors are highly coveted and unique to this canyon. The area is off limits now and has been developed into mini-ranches so no collecting is likely ever to be done there again. It's very well agatized and faithfully preserves the wood grain. The high agate content means that this piece has polished up beautifully. It's just amazing how beautiful petrified wood can be and the fine oak specimens found in this remote Central Oregon desert location are among the finest in the world. This piece has fabulous cell structure and unbelievable medullary rays. If you want an unmistakably Swartz and beautiful unique species specimen from the location in your collection, this one would be a dandy! The slab is cut at a taper on the wider edge. This stone has been professionally cut and polished to a mirror perfect shine. The polish really is liquid perfect - a difference in the quality products Sticks-in-Stones has built its reputation on! It measures about 3 3/4" x 2 3/8" across the mirror polished face. It's cut about 0.38" thick. Weight is 0.20 lbs.
