74 x 46 inches. This is an early Pueblo wearing blanket which is distinctive in that many such blankets for everyday (as opposed to for marriage, puberty rites, etc.) are simple banded blankets, and this has more flare. As such, it is uncommon. I have classified it as Pueblo for the following reasons: It has dark brown warps, which was a Pueblo thing I haven't identified any lazy lines, which is a Navajo thing the dimensions are more typical of a Pueblo man's wearing blanket. Early Pueblo wearin...g blankets, as opposed to ceremonial textiles, were made for personal use, and so tend to show ethnographic wear this stands in contrast to Navajo weavings, which quickly became a commercial commodity and often had extreme treatment, for better or worse (souvenir or utility rug). This piece shows signs of having been worn as a blanket, in particular pulls and small holes in the corners, where it was held. There also are small, scattered holes in the field, where the dark warp shows through however, it does not show the generalized (all encompassing) wear that a floor piece would show, and it does not show evidence of insect damage. It is an old piece with a strong presence about it, which the previous owner had identified as 1870s Navajo. I would also put it closer to the 1870s than the 90s. The field features natural grays and ivory zig zags and night-into-day crosses. The red remains vivid, although the breaks in the bars along the top and bottom show that those were at one time a more saturated gold. While this is not in pristine condition, it is a distinctive Pueblo everyday textile that would be a good addition to any Navajo collection, since scholars have credited the Pueblo with sharing weaving techniques with the early Navajo.
