McQueen Ranch, Sweet Home area, Linn County, OregonThe McQueen Ranch has not produced petrified wood for quite a longtime, but a recent logging operation and the attendant soil disruption hasproduced some really nice specimens and we think we got some of the best! If you have been following our website during the past year you havealready seen what interesting a...nd beautiful specimens that the loggingoperation uncovered. The lapidary that obtained nearly all of the logsand limbs continues to produce really neat pieces like this one, which isdifferent and indeed a one-of-a-kind-log from this locality! The McQueen Ranch is directly across the road from the famedHolleywood Ranch which has consistently produced enormous amounts of petrifiedwood, but the two neighboring sites could not be more different inmineralization. As a matter of fact, the mineralization diversity at theMcQueen site is simply remarkable. This specimen is the core of anancient pine tree which was attacked by pocket rot fungus producing the polkadot pattern. The degree of fungal infection was so dramatic that there was barely enough preserved structure remaining to determine that it was a pine. Pocket rot is a When the logging operation is completeand the forest begins to regrow, there won't be any more petrified wooddiscovered from this site for a considerable period of time. So, if you like the strikingpatterns produced by this lovely material we suggest you acquire specimens foryour own collection before they are all gone - we did! This slab of the core of the tree measures 4.5" x 3.74" on the polished face and it is 7/16" thick.
