The fabled Umbilia eximia (Sowerby, 1845) from the Middle Miocene layers of Victoria, Australia, is an extraordinary taxon with a highly variable shell morphology. As such, it has been assigned various taxonomic names, both at subspecies and species level. Of these, the name frankstonensis (which I here choose to use as a form name, but it has also been used as subspecies names of eximia and brevis, see Darragh [2002]), refers to the morphotype that has coarser columellar teeth not ext...ending as far onto the columellar side. This form is a much rarer form than the 'traditional' eximia.
The piece on offer is a very rare 62.5 mm dwarf form (note the calloused margins and fully developed teeth and canals) of this already rare form of eximia - a highly unusual specimen not only in terms of size, but also in its growth anomaly on one side - potentially the cause of the stunted growth. Apart from the typical erosion marks, it is in excellent condition - no cracks or structural damage whatsoever. A truly unique shell of great rarity, suitable for an advanced collection, of a form that beautifully encapsulates the evolutionary pathway of eximia towards modern-day hesitata - note in particular the profile, and you will see that this is almost hinting at beddomei in shape.
