Original Description:
Exceptionally Rare and simply fantastic, ca1907 Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders, unpublished, large size, unmounted Photograph of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody and his Native American Oglala Sioux Indian Cast visiting and laying a wreath at the Uncas Monument in Norwich, Connecticut that was erected by Andrew Jackson's administration in the Mohegan Royal Burial Grounds to honor the 17th century Sachem of the Mohegan Tribe - an acknowledgment of Uncas as the t...rue “Last of the Mohegans”.
This outstanding Photograph of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West cast members measures approx. 6 3/4" by 4 3/4" and is un-mounted. It pictures Buffalo Bill Cody and four Native American Lakota Sioux Indians wearing elaborate, traditional dress gathered around the Uncas Monument with the wreath that was laid, prominently visible at the base of the Monument. Encircling the group at the base of the monument is a circle of Native American Indian Performers on horseback watching the ceremony. The Photograph has a hand stamp on the reverse that identifies the photographer as Hemment of New York City.
We believe that this is the only image of Buffalo Bill's visit to this sacred Native American Indian burial ground and as such is an exceptionally important piece of history. On July 2, 1907, American adventurer and showman “Buffalo Bill” Cody visited the Mohegan Royal Burial Grounds in Norwich, Connecticut. Colonel William F. Cody, who had begun his popular “Wild West” shows in the 1880s, was touring the Northeast when he came to lay a wreath on the site of the Uncas monument, a memorial to the revered Mohegan sachem. Cody was accompanied by two Lakota Sioux chiefs - Rocky Bear and Iron Tail, as well as over 100 members of his traveling show. The cornerstone of the Uncas monument had been laid on June 24, 1833, with President Andrew Jackson and Vice President Martin Van Buren attending the ceremony.
This Photograph was the personal property of Buffalo Bill Cody and descended directly in the Cody family to his great-granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow - granddaughter of Cody's daughter Irma.
This outstanding Photograph measures approx. 6 5/8" by 4 3/4" and is un-mounted. This Image, from The Cody Family collection, is unmounted and pictures Buffalo Bill Cody wearing an elaborately beaded, fringed buckskin jacket, calf high leather boots and holding his trademark, wide brimmed hat in his left hand. Three of the four Sioux Indian Chiefs hold eagle feather decorated lances while the fourth holds a fantastic, beaded Tobacco Bag.
Provenance: This fantastic Photograph descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill Cody's last surviving child. Buffalo Bill and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921) had four children but only their two daughters - Arta (1866-1904) and the baby Irma (1883-1918) lived to adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow Sr. (1880-1918) and had 3 children - Frederick Harrison Garlow Jr. (1911-1985); William Joseph Garlow (changed name to Cody) (1913-1992) and Jane Cody Garlow (1909-1987). When Irma and Fred Garlow Sr. died within three days of each other during the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their Grandmother Louisa, wife of Buffalo Bill Cody. Fred Garlow Jr. married Margaret Southerland and they had two children Patricia Ann (b.1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952). The Photograph offered here was the property of Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow, Buffalo Bill's direct great-granddaughter. It was the property of the Cody-Garlow family and was originally the property of "William F. Buffalo Bill" Cody. This Photograph spent most of the last half of the 20th century on loan to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center of the West and bears a BBHC index number on the verso (this Photograph does have a BBHC index number in pencil on the reverse).
