This is a beautiful Native American Hopi Pottery Bowl, by Irma David, Ca 1970's-1980's. Hand made with poly-chrome painted geometric bands and stylized Rain Bird designs all around the outer body of this nicely shaped bowl. It has great color and fire shading, the detail work is really good which is why her pieces are becoming more and more sought after. She is humble and down to earth. Most of her work is made for visitors who come to see her village, often stopping in at her home or her brother's. Never having taken up pottery in the ambitious sense, Irma has been largely overlooked in the Pueblo pottery world. Certainly her elaborate designs and traditional methods would merit the attention and awards of the various markets. In the four-corners region of the US, nineteen pueblos and villages have historically produced pottery. Although each of these pueblos use similar traditional methods of coiling, shaping, finishing and firing, the pottery from each is distinctive. Various clay's gathered from each pueblos local sources produce pottery colors that range from buff to earthy yellows, oranges, and reds, as well as black. Fired pots are sometimes left plain and other times decoratedmost frequently with paint and occasionally with applique. Painted designs vary from pueblo to pueblo, yet share an ancient iconography based on abstract representations of clouds, rain, feathers, birds,
I am not an expert on Indian pottery but I am pretty sure this is a Hopi piece. It measures around 6 12 inches at widest part and around 2 12 inches tall. It was sitting on my friends windowsill so has fading in spots from sun damage. There are 3 chips on the rim with one being colored dark brown to cover by previous owner. The inside has a 12 inch chip with a smaller one and some scratching of the finish around the underside of rim. The outside has a couple of chips, dings, and scratches. The b...ottom has the corn symbol.
