Up for auction is a Sioux Shamans Quilled Mans War Shirt. This shirt should date in the 1870s to 1890's. It does have some beadwork as well. There are multiple drops adorning this shirt. The back has a quilled, round medallion design that is 8" in diameter. The center of the medallion are 4 brain tanned leather and quilled drops. The shirt is trimmed in trade cloth. The sleeves have 16" of quillwork running down them and are 3/4" wide. Across the shoulders is a 14" strip of quill...work that is 1-1/2" wide. Each arm has 2 ermine drops and approximately 33 human hair drops that are all quilled on brain tanned leather coming out of the back of the shirt. The front of the shirt, there are another 8 of these drops. The collar is a coyote hide with 2 quilled medicine wheels attached to them. The medicine wheels are 2-1/2" in diameter. As you look at the shirt, the left arm has vertical dyes, spacings, approximately 11" down the sleeve. The entire shirt has been dyed with red ochre. The front of the shirt has a 4-1/2" trade cloth sewn underneath the coyote. The other sleeve is adorned with black hoof marks painted on both sides. It is adorned with 46 quilled human hair drops on that sleeve plus 2 weasel drops. The bottom of the shirt is adorned with deer and antelope toe drops. There are about 76 toe drops. The shirt measures 60" wide from left to right overall. It is 42" from the top of the shirt to the bottom. One sleeve is longer than the other and measures 21" long. The other sleeve is 19" long by 19" wide. It is 24" wide from the bottom bottom of the armpit across to the other armpit. This piece is out of the Lutheran Reverend Ernest Von Kronwitter that was from Germany but was doing Missionary work in the Dakotas and other Indian Reservations in the early 1900's He collected these items and took them back to Germany before World War 1 broke out.
