This listing is fora wonderful Shaker step stool made by Frank Belt.This stool is made of wood and is stained in a dark walnut finish (dark, but not enough red to read as mahogany).This one step Shaker step stool is modeled after full-size stools. The design was brilliant: a step stool, to allow you to reach high cabinets, etc, that you can hang on a wall peg when not in use, and grab onto the back of to swing it into place when needed.This stool has a beautifully tapered back with a l...arge round hole in it (for hanging it on a shaker peg rail). The back extends in one piece to form the back legs. The seat is a tapered square (so an isosceles trapezoid). The front leg piece shows a trestle joint in front that fastens the perpendicular brace (that supports the seat underneath) to the front legs. The stool is signed and dated underneath "F. Belt '78."It would be so lovely in a country kitchen or a colonial roombox.
For those who want to know about the artisan:I have not been able to find much about Frank or his wife, Nellie, but I've learned a little about them in my own work. Frank Belt was married to Nellie, and both of them made miniatures together in the 1970s and 1980s (I'm not sure when they stopped; the only pieces of theirs I have encountered are from 1975-1980s). It looks like Frank made the wooden furniture and Nellie specialized in the upholstery and fabric work (canopies on beds, as well as upholstery on chairs). Every piece of Frank's miniature furniture that I have encountered is done with tremendous precision and skill. I would guess he might have known a thing or to about full-size furniture-making, as he seems to follow the same rules in his beautiful tiny work. I wish I'd known them; they seem to have been quite a pair, making minis together. Approximate Dimensions: 3 9/16" H x 1⅜" W x 1⅜" D
