Original Description:
The Hawsing Iron was a two man operation. One man would hold the iron on the seam to be caulked while another would pound the caulk home using a wood mallet. The description I read of the work also said that the caulk is initially put in place by a man using the smaller caulking iron. The Hawsing iron is than used to pound it home. Some interesting articles can be found by Googling it. There is no maker name on the iron. It is not worn or damaged, has seen very little use. Was pro...bably made by the ships carpenter or blacksmith. The handle is 24" long. The edge is 4".
