Greetings. You are bidding on the original art for a political or editorial cartoon by DORMAN HENRY SMITH about the Hawley Smoot Tariff Bill (later known as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act). Description: This is NOT a copy or stat or proof. This is the original art, pen and ink over graphite, drawn by Dorman H. Smith. Publication date unknown (probably late 1929-1930 given the subject matter). The paper size is 30" tall by 24.5" wide.&n...bsp; Signed in the lower right "Dorman H. Smith" and inscribed to fellow cartoonist Ed Nofziger. No copyright indicia (probably NEA). Titled "Looking the gift horse in the mouth" in pencil above the art. Smith's incisive wit, as well as his deft mastery of pen and ink is on full display as this political cartoon questions the wisdom of the Hawley Smoot Tariff Bill. The bill was originally designed to aid struggling farmers by imposing tariffs on imported foodstuffs. Congress, however, added a ton of other (non-food) items to the bill, raising the prices on countless items which the farmer needs to by. The bill was signed into law by President Hoover in 1930. Well designed and drafted cartoon. The horse (mule?) is staggering, and the fat-cat Congressman in the background looks smugly pleased with himself. Artist Information: Dorman Henry Smith (1892-1956) was an editorial cartoonist for Cleveland's NEA Service from 1921 through the early 1930s when he moved to the Chicago Herald and Examiner. He traveled with Hemmingway to Spain in 1924, and twice interveewed Josef Stalin. Condition: This art is in very good condition on art paper, without any stats or paste-overs. Minor white out corrections. Toning to paper and numerous small creases, edge tears, spots, tack holes and overall soiling.
