With either a brunette or blonde #1 or #2 Barbie in it, this set would display beautifully. The face of the box is still very lovely. All the sides and top of the lid are evenly color-matched too. This is clearly one of the very earliest pink boxes because it's the lighter shade of pink. Very '50s! What a phenomenal piece of Americana! And the original box bottom has the first little owner's name and address written on it. I was told that the store owner wrote it, because he was reserving the boxed doll for the little girl who wanted it very much. Could you blame her? 😊 I love that!.. it further adds to the history and evokes images and memories of a simpler time in our country.
The Sweet Dreams outfit (#973), is near mint. Virtually flawless. It features the textured sheer tricot baby doll pajamas with embroidery on the bodice. The elastic on both pieces is like new. It has no deterioration or stretching on either piece. That's quite amazing, given the fact that they're 60 years old! Likewise, the ultra rare #1 shoes with holes in the soles, have never lost their pompoms and had them replaced or re-glued. So cool! The hair ribbon and real brass alarm clock are also included. The clock is definitely the original one for this set. It's tarnished, but that's how it was when I acquired it. Never tried clearing it. I'm sure it would be a fairly simple process, if you're inclined. The little wax apple and cardboard diary were lost by the original little owner, but as you probably know, they're easy to find because the common yellow version of this outfit was made for several years and they made A LOT of those. I always find it curious that Mattel didn't market the pink version as the predominant option. It is SO beautiful. Please look at the photos closely and check out the the gorgeous, unfaded pink color. 🥰 And please examine all the photos thoroughly because they're an extremely important part of the description.
Worth mentioning, also, is the fact that Mattel often broke the rules we collectors sometimes think are iron-clad. They often sold transitional dolls and other items, sooo... if you're economizing and don't want to to invest in a #1 or 2, it wouldn't be too silly to put a beautiful early #3 Barbie in the box. I've see a few truly NRFB examples like that.
