Mid/late 19th century needlepoint - c.1870. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The field of the gauze is stitched with a winsome scene in which a youth is sitting on a grassy bank dotted with flowers with trees and a stretch of water in the distance. The youth, dressed in a red hunting tabard and a blue hat with a feather in it, is looking down at his pet spaniel. The spaniel is keen to get onto his master's knee so he can... get closer to the bird of prey perched on his gauntleted hand. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a very small area of damage on the left side directly opposite the youth's forearm. The colours of the wool are good with some shades not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the needlepoint has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.
