This listing is fora lovely drop leaf side table made by Frank Belt.This table is made of wood and is stained in a dark walnut finish.The drop leaf table has its origins as early as the 16th century, but this particular style of table, called a Pembroke table, was first designed in the mid-1700s. True to its history, this table has two "flaps" that can extend the size of the tabletop, as well as a working drawer on one end. Typical full-size Pembroke tables had a sliding bar under the ...table top to hold each flap in an upright position; this miniature replica does not feature any support mechanism. Instead its hinges (which allow each drop leaf to fall and rise) are so tight that each drop leaf stays firmly horizontal once raised, even with anything heavy placed on top.The working drawer has a small brass drawer pull.The table can be used with both flaps down, one flap up or both flaps up, depending on how much space you have and what function you want the table to serve.The four legs are slender and tapered squares.
The chair is signed and dated underneath "F. Belt '78."
For those who want to know about the artisan:I have not been able to find much about Frank or his wife, Nellie, but I've learned a little about them in my own work. Frank Belt was married to Nellie, and both of them made miniatures together in the 1970s and 1980s (I'm not sure when they stopped; the only pieces of theirs I have encountered are from 1975-1980s). It looks like Frank made the wooden furniture and Nellie specialized in the upholstery and fabric work (canopies on beds, as well as upholstery on chairs). Every piece of Frank's miniature furniture that I have encountered is done with tremendous precision and skill. I would guess he might have known a thing or to about full-size furniture-making, as he seems to follow the same rules in his beautiful tiny work.
