This listing is fora gorgeous upholstered wing back arm chair made by Nellie Belt.This chair is done in a traditional contemporary wingback style with a fully upholstered seat, back, arms, and wings. The seat cushion is removable. The upholstery is a pretty ivory damask brocade with hints of pink and taupe in the triangular design. The upholstery work is beautifully executed. Her seams are so perfect she didn't even need trim to mask them. There are two straight square l...egs in front, and two curved square legs at the back. There is an H-stretcher joining them underneath. All four legs are wood and stained with a dark walnut finish.The chair is signed and dated underneath "N. Belt '78."
For those who want to know about the artisan:I have not been able to find much about Nellie, but I've learned a little about her in my own work. Nellie was married to Frank Belt, and both of them made miniatures together in the 1970s and 1980s (I'm not sure when they stopped; the only pieces of theirs I have encountered are from 1975-1980s). It looks like Frank made the wooden furniture and Nellie specialized in the upholstery and fabric work (canopies on beds, as well as upholstery on chairs). Every piece of Nellie's miniature upholstery that I have encountered is done with tremendous precision and skill. I would guess she might have known a thing or to about full-size upholstery, as she seems to follow the same rules in her beautiful tiny work. My guess is that Frank made the legs for this chair and possibly the wood understructure. I wish I'd known them; they seem to have been quite a pair, making minis together.
