Original Description:
UBER RARE Antique circa 1830 Bernard Cabesse A-Mirecourt parlor guitar Made in France with Very Rare original Roublot Gaillard A-Mirecourt coffin case (plus modern TKL case == Created by Master Luthier Cabesse about 1830, and a beautiful example of early 19th guitars -- Monsieur Cabesse reportedly produced very few instruments annually preferring wonderful quality to quantity -- and obviously many hours of hand-craftsmanship went into this guitar == Feather-light at just over two pound...s (950 grams) == Full 25" scale == Solid Spruce top, Flamed maple back and sides, ebony fingerboard and bridge, Mother of Pearl frets and bridge/nut saddles, Intricate MOP-ebony-colored wood inlays/binding/rosette, period decoupage (which we believe original to guitar, but could have been added) -- some frets are missing as is a small area of inlay at treble side of neck/body top joint == Friction pegs were replaced with early 20th century banjo tuners with celluloid buttons -- 3 missing string pins & we think the remaining ebony w/MOP pins are possibly original == Needs some restoration but remarkably intact and complete == Maple body and Spruce top are in Excellent condition, I can't find any cracks or repairs to wood -- top is flat with no bellying or collapsing & bridge is tight -- old repair (re-glue) of back binding and edge seam with evident glue & gaps == Neck is pretty straight but action would be approximately 7/32" at neck/body joint -- we don't think the beautifully forged neck brace is original and it appears the neck was broken and re-attached to body, possibly early-20th century when the tuners were replaced -- some glue evident at neck joint & a couple of cracks in neck heel -- neck would need to be re-set for better action ==  == I actually think it would be playable with just the missing frets replaced -- with nylon or gut strings of course -- but obviously would need some restoration to fully meet the museum-quality value of the instrument == And this wonderful guitar deserves to be preserved and highly valued -- the workmanship is gorgeous including details like the arched carved braces to the recessed fret markers with MOP dots atop a central button == NOTE: Examining the guitar today with my luthier (John McDonald of McLuthiers in Lubbock), he discovered the peghead-back ebony veneer is carried through to entire back of neck!! Yes, the entire back of neck is covered with ebony veneer! Previously mentioned cracks appear to be just in the veneer == John said probably refinished, but in notably good shape and easily restored ==Includes original very rare Roublet Gaillard (also of Mirecourt) wood coffin case with original label -- case needs work, lining is mostly gone, seams are loose, lockplate needs re-mounted (it's in the case), hardware adjusted ==37" overall length -- 11.5" lower bout -- 9" upper bout -- 3" body depth -- 950 gramsWe have had quite reputable estimates of restored value at $10, 000 to possibly $15, 000 -- It does need some work, but I've rarely seen 80 year old guitars in as fundamentally sound condition i.e. no top/body cracks or breaks or warpage, or serious neck bows/warps -- and this beauty is close to 190!! Amazing....I do not see any brazilian/madagascar or pachyderm products used in construction (ebay is flagging use of the common terms for these products) Please inquire about any shipping needs == Coffin case will be packed in separate package ==More Pictures available on request of course!NOTE: I just noticed that the highest fret and the second one above it have a plastic or celluloid replacement for the MOP fret, and there is a small repaired hairline crack between that fret and the 2 above it on body ==If you are considering a purchase, please take a minute and read our feedback !!!
