The three bolt guitars get a bad rap but these early ones are every bit as good as the late 60’s guitars. They had light wood and some still got nitro finishes. The pickups are staggered poles like the 60’s and wound on the same machines, with the same wire, around the same magnets by the same people, maybe even by Abigail Ybarra. When the three bolt is made right and set up correct they are very stable. Love them or hate them this is a quality guitar from the same year as a four bolt guitar for more than half as much!
The guitar is very clean and I have been completely over it so here are the specific details:
The body shows use and some finish checking. No abuse, cracks, repairs or nasty buckle rash but there are some dents and dings and wear spots. The biggest dent is on the front edge of the upper horn and you can see the crystaline structure of the nitro in the dent. The body routes are intact and it has the worm route! It is pretty clean but it is still a fifty year old guitar. The finish on the body and neck black lights correctly. Original pickguard and back plate are free of damage. All the pickguard screws and back plate screws are original (the back plate is missing one screw). I leave my back plates off anyway. Original strap buttons/screws. The pickups show their original eggplant colored windings. All the wires are still original and the tone controls are set to the neck and bridge pickup. Original three way switch is still in in place. Vintage dime capacitor that modern caps can’t replicate in tone control. Tuners work and have never been off. The frets show a little wear from 50 years of use but they are tall, smooth and have plenty of life left. Neck stamp is Nov ‘71. Serial number on neck plate is 3379xx. The fretboard is beautiful dark indian rosewood. Earlier style Fender F-Tuners hold tune and are clean and shiny. Original tremolo arm w/tip and bridge cover are included! The case is solid and clean. Fender case logo is intact. The logo is Fender with a tail and and no “R” trademark. The case ends are leather and in good shape. The internal padding is clean and free of smells. It holds the guitar secure and all the latches still work and spring open.
A vintage jack and some original pots would not cost too much and then the guitar would be 100% original. The BIN is less than any price out there right now on Reverb, G-Base or any wear else. Grab it while you can!The parts alone are worth more than the starting price. My loss your gain. The guitar sounds awesome and plays great! I hate to part with it but I am not independently wealthy so I can't keep everything...See photos as part of the description.
