Two nice old wrought iron padlocks in good working condition with keys. The locks, I think, are 17th century the one with the simple screwdriver blade key likely the older of the two. Both keys have been made for the locks at a later date they have 19th century French bows, both keys work the locks well. The lock with the push key is the rarer of the two it is nicely made and of an unusual form. Condition is good. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. A wonderful and rarely found on its own is this 17th century Lock Hasp , sorry locked and no key The wonderfully shaped back plate.Although I have not tried to unlock this they are not usually that difficult.Great to put back on a box or coffer, Probably Continental.
Very rare 17th century iron French keys about 5 and 6 inches (15 cm) long. The larger key is likely late 17th century or early 18th century and has a pierced bow of a style typical of what are called marriage keys with heart-shaped piercings. These keys fitted locks on dowry chests given upon marriage. This is a good example with the solid stem ending with a bit with a ward cut typical in shape of the period. The smaller key is even most rare, very likely earlier, perhaps 16thcentury. Its chise...lled bow is more elaborate as was the case for fine quality renaissance period keys. Some of the detailing in the cutting of the bow has worn smooth over many years. The holes in the bow suggest that originally there was a central pillar through the bow. The key is quite worn but pretty good condition for its age. These are two rare and very collectable keys. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
