Small vase produced in a classic form with a narrow opening over a neck and swelled body tapering to a flat base. Round form does not have a design or decorations on the body, with the marks on the base indicating "NC" for Newcomb, JM for Newcomb Master Potter, Joseph Meyer (1897-1927) and the letters FR. ...Joseph Meyer was the third potter hired for Newcomb Pottery. He threw and shaped virtually all of the Newcomb Pottery pieces from the late 1890's to December 1927, when he retired because of failing health. I'm not real sure what the letters FR stand for but have researched it. I found that Caroline "Frances" Richardson, of the class of 1895 was a Newcomb artist and was also the first Counselor to Women at Newcomb College. I also looked in my mother's Newcomb Pottery book and found that FR was used to indicate the use of dark red clay for the body between 1895 and 1907 which would certainly fit in this time period. The red color was achieved by kiln reduction. The glaze is a dark blue with matte finish and the vase is in excellent condition as you can see in the pictures. Please enlarge each one for the best description and send any questions that you may have through my eBay messages. This vase is one of several pieces that I have of my mother's Newcomb collection and has been on display for many years. She took excellent care of it.
