Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Dolly Williams - 1821. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following biblical quotation with Dolly's name, her age which looks to be 17 or possibly 19, and the date of 1821 beneath
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youthWhen the evil days come not nor the years draw nighWhen thou shalt say I have lo pleasure in themECCLES. CHAP.12 VER ...1Dolly Williams's work Aged 17 1821
The words have a fruit tree plus birds on each side with a pair of lions above and below the left side tree and a pair of lions above that on the right side. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central floral garland containing the sets of initial OW & MW, possibly those of Dolly's parents. The garland has a crown and strawberry on each side with four flower pots above each strawberry, then followed by an oak tree surrounded by a trio of lions.  There is a fruit basket beneath the floral garland with birds, floral motifs and a floral urn to its left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched at the centre with a splendid plump green bird standing on a tree stump with sprigs of leaves around him. A smaller bird is standing on a perch to his left and right with a lion and floral urn by the left bird and a floral urn and charming two storey red house by the bird on the right. Each bird of the smaller birds has an owl, tree pot and dog above them with a lion and flower basket to the side of each tree pot. There is a delightful image of bird with her two chicks in the bottom right corner of the linen then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby in places with the odd small mark here and there. The colours of the silks are good with some minor bleeding to the green stitch work of the right side oak tree. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Dolly first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is some thinning around the floral garland and a few small areas of damage to the linen. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. Measures 17" x 15 1/4"
