Alaskan Scrimshaw LETTER OPENER ~ Tall Ship Etching on BoneYou are bidding on a piece of scrimshaw thought to have been purchased in Alaska. The item is thought to be a letter opener. It is 6 ¼ inches long. It has a design of a tall ship in the style of scrimshaw. The material is thought to be fossilized whale bone. No chips, cracks or repairs. The scrimshaw was stored with a letter opener collection. Everywhere my uncle traveled he purchased a letter opener or three. T...hey were light, they traveled easily and they didn’t eat much. The pieces were stored in a large box together. After every trip he added his new pieces to the box. On occasion he would go into antique shops and buy a new addition. Some of the pieces are smudged and have fingerprints. I am now selling off the collection. If I am able I will indicate where the opener was purchased. Some are unmarked. I grouped them by country of origin, material, and style. If more than one offering is purchased I will bundle postage.
