Original Description:
A four-color example of one of the great Franklin fluorescent classics and esperite is one of the king fluorescent species at Franklin. It is a rare fluorescent species, and the canary yellow fluorescent color makes for a bright and startling appearance. Esperite is a lead calcium zinc silicate and was originally named "calcium larsenite' but renamed in 1965 after Esper Signius Larsen, Jr. petrologist and Professor of Geology at Harvard University. Franklin is the type locality of esperite and h...as not been found at the sister deposit at Sterling Hill. It is reported from another locality in South America. The most indicative assemblage of esperite is massive, black metallic franklinite with "swirls" of resinous to dull, orange zincite. Do note the small section of glassy to resinous, deep red zincite on one face of the specimen which is very uncommon. There are spots and grains of dull, greasy white to pale brownish esperite and large sections of greasy white hardystonite. Hardystonite is a calcium zinc silicate, and the Franklin mine is the type locality for hardystonite. It was named in 1899 by John E. Wolff after Hardyston Township, Sussex County, locality of the Franklin orebody before the incorporation of Franklin Borough in 1913. Hardyston Township surrounds the borough of Franklin today. There are some minor spots of associated willemite, and it is usually a sub-vitreous white or very pale green in this type of assemblage. Willemite is frequently associated and makes for a pleasing contrast in ultraviolet light. There are some sections of coarse, white calcite present in the matrix. Esperite fluoresces a bright canary yellow, and the willemite fluoresces a bright green, the hardystonite a moderate blue-violet, and the calcite a bright to moderate red. All best seen under shortwave (254nm) ultraviolet light. This is a fair example of a four-color fluorescent specimen and suitable for any fluorescent mineral collector.Dimensions are 9x8.4x8.7cm - 3½x3¼x3½in. All potential buyers need to be aware that being able to view fluorescent minerals requires an ultraviolet lamp. Most of the minerals from the Franklin and Sterling Hill zinc mining district fluoresce under shortwave ultraviolet light. The shortwave wavelength is 254nm or otherwise known as UV C. Always read the description carefully to determine if the main mineral of interest for a particular specimen will fluoresce. ALL fluorescent minerals depicted in our storefront are illuminated by two (2) 9 watt Triple short/mid/longwave AC Model 9SM-110 Way Too Cool LLC ultraviolet lamps, and the shortwave tubes and filters were replaced in late 2018. There are several available brands and models of ultraviolet lights on eBay and other online sources. Still, some overexposure should be expected in some photographs to compensate for a weak response of a fluorescent specimen. All buyers should exercise safe viewing practices regarding the use of ultraviolet light. Visual dark adaption is highly recommended in the optimal viewing of fluorescent minerals. Buyers should also be aware of what type of lighting to view the specimens under. This can result in perceived differences of color and contrast due to color and contrast shifting under various kinds of lights available.All photographs were taken with a Nikon D5300 digital camera with a Nikon DX AF-S 18-55mm lens attached with a UV filter. Lighting was done with a pair of OSRAM 8.5 watt LED A19 5000K 800 lumens bulbs in brushed aluminum reflectors. The photographs were processed on a color-calibrated flat panel monitor. Do note the Imperial measurement conversion is the nearest equivalent to the listed metric measurement.
