Henry Clay Sr. [1777 1852] was an American attorney and statesman from Kentucky who served in both the United States Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives and as the ninth Secretary of State. In 1811 he was chosen as speaker of the House and along with President James Madison led the United States into the War of 1812 against Britain. In 1814 he helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent, which brought an end to the war. In 1849, Clay played a key role in passing the Compromise of 18...50, which resolved a crisis over the status of slavery in the territories. Clay is generally regarded as one of the most important and influential political figures of his era and during his political career received electoral votes for president in 1824, 1832 and 1844 presidential elections and also helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. For his role in defusing sectional crises, Clay earned the appellation of the ''Great Compromiser''. Listed for auction is a rare letter extract written by Henry Clay at his home at Ashland. The upper portion of the letter is dated October 22, 1849, followed by hand written content. The lower portion of the letter is dated Ashland September 23, 1851, followed by written content and is signed at the bottom as follows, ''I am truly your friend H. Clay'' in black fountain pen. The letter measures 4.00 x 3.25, it is affixed at the top only to a larger page and is in very good to fine condition. The letter will be accompanied with a rare original vintage carte de visite of Henry Clay. The card measures 4.00 x 2.50 inches and is in very good condition. The letter is authentic, a rare and desirable example of this noted statesman and is ideal for display with the carte de visite which is also rare to obtain.
