Monstera deliciosa Albo Variegata ‘Contorta’ AROID UNICORN ALERT!! For those aroiders my age, grab yourreaders, and pull your seat up so you can read about this one, for you youngeraroiders, close some of those Etsy pages, you’ll likely wanna bid on this afterreading about it. You are all aware of the ‘other’ legit monstera forms outthere, albo this, aurea that, as well as the popular cultivar currently beingmass produced by the acre as ‘Thai Constellation’, yo...u have probably also heardof all sorts of made up variants like ‘mint’ or ‘half moon’. Well, meet Monsteradeliciosa albo variegata ‘Contorta’, the rarest and slowest growing of all ofthe legitimate and recognized forms of M. deliciosa! Take the large foliage ofM. deliciosa, add a healthy amount of creamy white variegation, then add aliberal amount of random growing contortions, each leaf comes out different, you never know what the next leaf will grow out as. That said, making divisionsof this plant is really tricky, variegation is unpredictable, but adding in themutated growth and getting a single division that has both variegation, and thecontorta is a total crap shoot! I would imagine tissue culture attempts withthis form merely yielding plug trays full or aroid ooze rather than a viableplant material. The growth rate of this form is mind numbingly slow, our stockplant has been growing on a prime wall space for ten years now and has onlygrown six feet tall so far (Thai Constellation would have swallowed the housewithin the first year or two if grown on the same wall). We don’t typicallyever cut this plant, but an incident caused a little damage to our stock plant, three divisions were the result, out of those three, two turned out solid greedwith no contortions, in other words this will be our ONLY offering of this raremonstera this year. Here in tropical zone 10, we grow this plant outdoors yearround, we are confident that many of you could easily grow this indoors as ahouseplant with little effort, however we suspect the large foliage may notreach its full potential without a sturdy host for to climb. The auction plantyou are bidding on, is last year’s division, it is well rooted and showing bothvariegation and contorted growth. The stock plant pictured is our stock plant, the parent plant, and shown only to show the potential what the auction plantcould grow into with optimal growing care.
