Offered here for your bidding evaluation is this antique German bisque covered jar with a sultry, risqué smoking (hot!) lady motif! The size of this piece suggests a tobacco jar, but perhaps it is a dresser jar—I don’t know. Whether humidor or vanity accessory, this covered jar has all the hallmarks of Schafer & Vater, without actually having the S & V hallmarks! It is only incised with the number 2736. But, not all their pieces were marked! I would almost certainly stake my name ...on it being S & V, though. Subject matter, colors, matte bisque finish, style—all suggest this desirable maker. I’ve never seen this piece before, but there is no end to the pieces you can turn from this prolific maker! The jar with cover stands around 5 1/2” tall. Art Nouveau in its aesthetic, both the lid and the base of the jar are decorated with raised relief flowers in purple, with green sinewy foliage. Swirls of lingering white ‘smoke’ stand out against the blue background, as do the contrasting bands encircling the jar. As with many a Schafer & Vater lady, the seductive beauty wears an off the shoulder dress, coyly displaying her ample décolletage, while boldly enjoying a smoke at a time when the activity would have been considered a bit risqué. All the detail is sharply molded in raised relief, and painted with a sure but delicate hand. The jar is in excellent condition, free from damages, but small manufacturing blemishes can be seen, especially on the underside of the lid. There is a tiny spot of the white paint dripped on the lid, seen in the last picture. Please see my other listings for more antique and vintage finds, keeping in mind that I would be happy to combine shipping whenever practical. It could be by another period maker in a similar style. Without the impressed mark you can’t be sure. Please keep that in mind when you are bidding!
