This is a Graflex Focal Plane Shutter designed as an accessory back for 8x10 cameras using a barrel lens. This shutter winds with some difficulty and the shutter releases slowly. The shutter curtain is wrinkled. The section of the shutter for the highest speeds has some damage and a repair was attempted (not by me). Because the shutter winds to the next speed, because the shutter release does trip the shutter, albeit slowly, and because there is tension in the b...ottom winding spring, I believe this shutter can be repaired to function correctly. Please do not buy this thinking it is a working shutter. I believe it has the potential to work correctly if you have the skills necessary to repair it.
This Graflex Focal Plane Shutter was introduced at a time when many 8x10 cameras used a brass barrel lens without a built-in shutter. Film and plate exposures were so slow that a photographer could just uses his hat in front of the lens as a shutter. As faster film was developed with higher asa/iso speed, much faster shutter speeds were needed. This Graflex Focal Plane Shutter was introduced to adapt those early cameras to use the faster film.
When repaired, this Graflex Focal Plane Shutter would be a great accessory for those who are shooting with an 8x10 film camera today and want to use a vintage brass barrel lens that does not have its own shutter. For the collector, you probably know that this is a somewhat scarce and desirable Graflex accessory.
