NO BIDDING - NO WAITING The Stanley Sweetheart trademark was introduced in 1915 and was stamped on hardware manufactured by the Stanley Works. This heart logo was adopted in homage to William H. Hart who in 1854 at the age of 19 was chosen to become one of the chief officers of The Stanley Works. Hart was a leader of this company for 61 years. The Sweetheart Trademark was first used on plane irons in 1920 at the time of the merger between The Stanley Rule Level Co. and the Stanley Works - and as... Paul Harvey was prone to say, now you know the rest of the story. The marking on this plane was the second generation of the logo and only appeared on planes in 1921 and 1922. Here is the holy grail of bench planes - a clean vintage Stanley No. 1 Sweetheart marked specimen. Stanley manufactured the No. 1 from 1867 to 1943. This model is 5 12" long with a 1 14" iron. The No. 1 was so small it could not accommodate a lateral adjustment mechanism and was never produced with one. There were never any bed markings for the same reason. The only marking found on this plane are on the iron. The iron is 4 34" tall and appears to be full length with a good sharp edge. The adjusting wheel is solid brass (not undercut) as are the cap nuts for the wood studs. Great original patina. Disclosures: there is a fine hairline crack in the lever cap running from the keyhole slot to the outside edge (see photo) there is a minor chip out of the base of the knob some staining to the sole minor character marks in the wood after 100 years of use and, normal use and handling wear for a plane of this period. Have you been waiting for the holy grail to complete your collection Condition - good or better used as found original as noted above. The shippiing allowance includes full insurance coverage. Please visit my OTHER listings for the unusual and hard to find. Terms are FOB shipping point and shipping charges are shown to CONUS. The family of flat bottomed planes used for surface smoothing are collectively called bench planes - included are the smooth, jack, fore, and jointer varieties which typically have the beveled edge of their cutters on the bottom side. The angle of the iron relative to the sole for bench planes was pretty much standardized at Stanley to 45 degrees as a suitable working compromise to both hard and soft woods.
