+++++ AN EBAY MEMBER HAS KINDLY REACHED OUT TO ME TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO CLARRIFY AND CORRECT THIS LISTING. THE WOOD IS NOT WALNUT BUT CHERRY. ADDITIONALLY, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY - TWO DRAWERS - UPPER RIGHT - HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS BEING CONSTRUCTED OF OAK - NOT MATCHING CHERRY. I HAVE NO EXPLANATION FOR THE DIFFERENCE IN WOOD BUT IT IS A MATERIAL FLAW. AS WITH ANY NEED, REPLACEMENT DRAWERS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH GERSTNER AT A MODERATE COST.MY MANY THANKS TO THE EBAY MEMBER WHO HAS P...OINTED THESE FACTS OUT TO ME. PLEASE DO NOT - NOT - NOT BID ON THIS BOX IF THESE ISSUES ARE DEAL BREAKERS FOR YOU. IN ANY EVENT I WILL CONTACT ANY WINNING BIDDER TO REVIEW THE ABOVE AND ASSURE THEIR ACCEPTANCE. PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL I CONTACT YOU FIRST. SORRY TO ALL FOR THE ERRORS - I DO NOT WANT TO DISSAPPOINT ANY POTENTIAL BUYER. IT IS STILL HOWEVER A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL BOX++++Very Rare Gerstner 75th Anniversary Walnut Machinists Tool Chest Cabinet Box. Condition is Used. In amazing condition for a box from 1981. (Thirty-eight years ago, 1981, was the first year the word "internet" was used and MS-DOS was released by Microsoft along with the first IBM-PC. Tempus fugit!) This box was only available to the then current Gerstner Owner's Club members. Made for only one year then discontinued. This stunning walnut chest has brass hardware and chocolate brown felt. The engraved brass plate indicates that this is box # 0572 and was made for James J. Trainor. This box was never in a tool room or used for tools. I would doubt that it was ever used for storage of anything given the excellent condition of the felt drawer liners. The box does not have its' original key however a replacement is available through Gerstner's website for a nominal cost. This Collector's Series box did not come with the "diamond-shaped" Gerstner mirror. It is not missing - this issue never had one.I have corresponded with Gerstner & Sons inquiring about how many of these boxes were produced. ( Info available on the net suggests 500 were produced but that is inconsistant with this box #0572 and others I have seen with serial numbers above five hundred.) Linda Waldop at Gerstner said "(these) chests were produced pre-computer, so any information we have would be filed in our Archives of paperwork. We do not know how many chests were produced without refering to those files". There is a process whereby for a fee of $50.00, Gerstner will research their paper files - they maintain this is (understandibly) very time consuming - but may be able to determine the actual number produced, if that is important. Condition: First, there are two small circular, dime-sized areas of finish loss on the top surface and a faint scratch upper left corner- pictured. Secondly, the brown felt on the pull-out shelf has faded and the wood under the finish is somewhat mottled - pictured. Evidently the chest was displayed with the shelf recessed for an extended period of time. Gerstner sells replacement felt. The process of renewal is simple and straight forward. Refer to their tutorial video on their website. Lastly, the center square compartment with slide out drawer inside: the spring ball latch is not catching. A simple adjustment with a Phillips screwdriver will correct this. Although I consider this box to be in excellent condition IT IS NOT NEW and may have very minor indications of use and wear. It is 38 years old, after all.The dimensions are nominally 19 1/2" tall, 20" wide and 11.5" deep. Weight: about 32 pounds without packing. Please have a look at the Gerstner website for information on this great American company. If you have not already seen it, there is a video showing the over 100 separate construction and hand finishing operations. As we all know, anything made by hand is rapidly becoming a lost art in our cad cam cnc world. Please refer to the photos. They are an INTEGRAL PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. If you have questions, please ask. If you need more photos, please ask. Due to the high shipping cost of this item I WILL NOT ACCEPT RETURNS. Please satisfy yourself as to condition BEFORE BIDDING. Thanks for your understanding in this regard. Stated shipping quote is for domestic, continental U.S. lower 48 states only. Any exception to this, please contact me for a shipping quote. You may never have an opportunity to add a Gerstner 75th Anniversary chest to your collection. Don't miss this one!
