American Wrought Blacksmith Anvil Circa 1899-1910 Well Used Condition.Clean Hardie & Pritchel holes.
With Heavy Plate Steel BaseWhat we have here is a Peter Wright English anvil. The last picture shows 2-1-2. The one is a little hard to see, but it's right above the lettering, a little to the right of the center of the anvil. England was the only country I know of that used the 'stone weight' system on their anvils. Google English stone weight if you would like to see a better d...escription of the stone weight methodology.
1st number stands for 2 x 112 = 224 lbs
2nd number stands for 1 x 28 = 28 lbs
3rd number is what is left over which is 2 lbs. Add the three numbers up and you get 254 lbs. It's normal for anvils of this age to lose a little weight due to rust/use/corrosion, etc.
Also the letters you can see, are W-R-O-U-G which are from the circular shaped stamp "SOLID WROUGHT" that Peter Wright would stamp his anvils. Another clue to it's maker is the ledge on the front and back feet of the anvil, Peter Wright was known to almost always have ledges on their anvil's feet.NO SHIPPING, PICK UP ONLY!
