Very rare and stunningly beautiful, original ca1890’s Native American Mandan or Sioux Indian Bead Decorated Buffalo Hide Bag. This outstanding, late 19th century Hide Bag / Pouch measures approx. 9 3/4" long (including the beaded loop fringe) and 5 1/4" wide at its widest point.
The front of this wonderful Beaded Bag is made of a thick, buffalo hide panel possibly repurposed from a Tobacco Bag or some other type of Possible bag. Affixed to the back of this ...panel there is a commercially tanned leather pouch which folds up and over the top of the beaded panel exposing the opening to this somewhat odd container. The affixed pouch appears to be somewhat later than the beaded panel although not significantly so.
The bag features a beautiful, geometric design executed using periwinkle, forest green, cobalt blue, chalk white, greasy yellow and translucent colored seed beads. The design is hand spot stitched and stunningly beautiful.
We are unsure of the original purpose of this wonderful Hide Pouch – it may have simply been a Possible Bag. We would greatly appreciate any information that would help us more definitively identify this fascinating Mandan or Sioux Bag.

This very rare and very beautiful, ca1890’s Bead Decorated Bag is in very good condition and displays beautifully. The beaded panel that forms the front of the Bag is very well preserved with the only bead loss being the the outermost lane of beads at the sides. The delicate, beaded loop fringe is also well preserved with only a single loop lacking. The leather pouch affixed to the back of the beaded panel is soiled on the exposed side but sound and intact with some of the hide strips that attach it to the beaded panel loosened. Please see the scans below for a good representation of the outstanding form and the condition of this beautiful Sioux Bag.
