This gorgeous tea set could hardly be in better shape for its age. Reid & Sons must have been pretty proud of their work since the pieces are covered with hallmarks, although some of them are somewhat confusing. The crown & lion indicate that the pieces were made in Sheffield, England, but underneath their name is the word Newcastle. Perhaps the items were made in Newcastle, where the silversmiths continue to work today, but were a...ctually stamped & sold in Sheffield. Based on the f & g hallmarks, the pieces were made in 1923 & 1924. There are also several Genie Lamp hallmarks which looks a lot like the mark of Roberts & Belk who are also out of Sheffield. Perhaps they teamed up for this one.There is an ultra thin clear coat that covers the entire set which has protected the original glowing sterling finish and kept it from tarnishing. It can be removed if desired. All of the polishing scratches you can see in the photos are on the clear coat, not the sterling.
