I had the incredible good fortune of buying this artwork, along with multiple other paintings and splash art by Don Sherwood, from the estate of his lawyer's wife in Upstate, NY. ...; Offered here is an exceptional ORIGINAL watercolor painting on artist grade paper of Hollywood Cowboy, Roy Rogers. This is not a mass produced print - it is an original one of a kind painting. Also included is an exceptional ORIGINAL India Ink Hand drawn and hand lettered cartoon panel on artist grade board, like shirt cardboard. This is not a mass produced print, or printed copy for syndication distribution - it is the original artwork drawn by Don Sherwood with text written by Radio/TV personality Bill Owen - it's one of a kind .
Layout lines for text are visible, as are small corrections with whiteout. Top banner text is applied piece of paper as seen.
This was a weekly cartoon newspaper feature syndicated to approx. 300 newspapers remembering old time radio shows.
Condition of both pieces is excellent with very minor corner compression and a couple very light smudges in the margins. This painting and matching splash art, along with others, were stored in a portfolio for many years. Never framed or displayed.
It would appear; based on the collection I purchased, that the friend was a western fan, as all of the artwork is western movie/ serial themed with a personalized autograph and message. I'll be listing more as time and research permits.
Google "Don Sherwood artist". He had a long and well respected career as a syndicated cartoonist, comic book artist and illustration artist doing magazine covers. He also did all the artwork for the 1991 Camillus Knife collection called "The Riders Of The Silver Screen". Be sure to check our other auctions, we will combine multiple pieces for shipment at a reduced postage cost when possible.
