Schuyler Colfax sends an autograph letter as Grant's Vice President about his sister being ill and the necessary precautions to be taken.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Schuyler Colfax" as Grant's Vice President, 3p, 5x8. South Bend, Indiana, 1869 October... 22. To "My dear Mr. Condin". In part: "I received your telegram to day at noon & answered it, but as this letter may reach you before you leave Cleveland, I write more fully to explain 'the situation'. My mother, with father & Carrie, started back from Cal. two weeks ahead of us, & stopped at Cheyenne to go by stage from there to Denver to visit my married sister there. She was unwell when she stopped & it developed immediately into Mountain Fever...So we journeyed back leisurely stopping at the Summit Donner Lake, Truckee, & Salt Lake. But when we reached Cheyenne we found she had been very low but was then out of danger...We stopped there three days but finding she needed no night watching but only strength, came on to arrange for rest for her at Omaha (½ way here) sleeping car...But Mountain Fever, which generally carries off persons of her age, leaves them always, when it is broken, utterly prostrate, weak beyond explanation, & utterly indifferent to all around them till they slowly regain strength & vigor...You know how glad we should be to see you & I hate to give up this opportunity...." Schuyler Colfax was serving as Speaker of the House (1863-1869) when he became Grant's Vice President. Vice President Colfax was denied re-nomination in 1872 when the Republicans thought he might seek the Liberal Republican nomination for President. Charges of corruption then arose concerning his involvement in the Crédit Mobilier of America stock scandal. In 1873, Colfax was fully exonerated but his political career was over. ¼x¼-inch diagonal tear at upper margin just nicks letters of 1 word. Folds do not touch signature. File notes (unknown hand) at upper margin. Overall, fine condition.
